Biking through Tbilisi’s Vake Park

If you're looking for a fun and active way to explore Tbilisi, look no further than Vake Park. This expansive green space is the perfect place to rent a bike and spend a few hours pedaling around, taking in the beautiful scenery and getting some exercise. As a local, I've spent many afternoons biking through Vake Park, and I'm excited to share my tips and recommendations with you.

Why Vake Park?

Vake Park is one of the largest parks in Tbilisi, and it offers a wide range of activities for visitors. In addition to biking, you can take a leisurely stroll through the park, have a picnic, play a game of soccer or basketball, or simply relax on one of the many benches and enjoy the view. The park is also home to several cafes and restaurants, so you can grab a bite to eat or a cup of coffee before or after your bike ride.

Renting a Bike

Before you start your adventure, you'll need to rent a bike. There are several bike rental shops located near the entrance to the park, and the prices are very reasonable. You can expect to pay around 10 lari ($3) per hour for a basic bike, or a bit more for a higher-end model. Most shops will also provide you with a helmet and a lock, so you can keep your bike secure while you explore the park.

Choosing Your Route

Once you have your bike, it's time to start exploring. There are several different routes you can take through Vake Park, depending on your interests and skill level. Here are a few of my favorite options:

  • The Main Loop: This is the most popular route through the park, and it's perfect for beginners or those who just want a leisurely ride. The loop is about 3 kilometers long and takes you around the perimeter of the park, offering beautiful views of the city and the surrounding mountains.

  • The Hill Climb: If you're looking for more of a challenge, try the hill climb. This route takes you up a steep hill in the center of the park, offering stunning views of Tbilisi from the top. Be warned, though – this route is not for the faint of heart, and you'll need to be in good physical shape to make it to the top.

  • The Lake Trail: For a more scenic ride, try the lake trail. This route takes you around the park's large lake, where you can see ducks, swans, and other wildlife. The trail is mostly flat, so it's a good option for those who want a moderately challenging ride.

Tips for a Great Ride

To make the most of your biking experience in Vake Park, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Stay hydrated: Tbilisi can get quite hot in the summer, so be sure to bring plenty of water with you. There are several water fountains located throughout the park where you can refill your bottle.

  • Wear sunscreen: The sun can be intense in Georgia, so be sure to wear sunscreen to protect your skin.

  • Be aware of pedestrians: While biking is allowed in Vake Park, there are also many pedestrians walking around. Be sure to watch out for them and give them plenty of space.

  • Take breaks: Biking can be tiring, especially if you're not used to it. Take breaks as needed to rest and recharge.

  • Bring a camera: There are plenty of beautiful photo opportunities in Vake Park, so be sure to bring a camera or your smartphone to capture the memories.

  • Try the food: Vake Park is home to several cafes and restaurants, so be sure to try some of the local cuisine while you're there. My personal favorite is the khinkali at the restaurant near the lake.

Exploring Beyond Vake Park

If you're up for a longer ride, you can also explore some of the nearby neighborhoods and attractions. One popular destination is the Turtle Lake, which is located about 5 kilometers from Vake Park. The ride to Turtle Lake is mostly uphill, but the views from the top are worth it. You can also visit the Open Air Museum of Ethnography, which is located about 7 kilometers from Vake Park. The museum features traditional Georgian architecture and offers a glimpse into the country's rich cultural heritage.

Conclusion

Biking through Vake Park is a great way to see a different side of Tbilisi and get some exercise at the same time. With its beautiful scenery, wide range of activities, and convenient bike rental options, Vake Park is the perfect destination for a fun and active day out. So grab your helmet, hop on a bike, and get ready for an adventure!
